Question : My 10 year old granddaughter for the past week ( we care for her and her8 year old sister during the day) has been sleeping from arrival at 8:30 , skipping breakfast, and nearly impossible to wake. Around 2 in the afternoon we can usually get her to get up after allowing her to sleep that long. We do periodically try to wake her, but she is nearly unresponsive. Today, she is really unresponsive. I managed to wake her around 11 am, to get her to have some cereal, but she kept nodding off. We wanted to take her and her sister shopping, which she loves to do, but she got back on the couch and refused to wake up. I gently shook her shoulder, and she startled and opened her eyes, and immediately fell back asleep.
She has some major trauma going on. Her mother decided to reunite with her estranged husband ( a real rotten, mean guy ), so this means changing schools, having a messed up older step sister, and having to deal with this guy who destroys things whenever he gets angry. Instead of encouraging the kids to pick up, he just scoops it all up and burns it. Likes to punch holes in walls, kick doors open, when the weed eater runs out of line, he bashes it against the ground until it is in pieces. If their weren't laws, I would have already crippled the SOB ( I am the grandfather). We had a talk the other night, and my granddaughter said she is scared of him, is thinking unhappy thoughts all the time, and thinks about death all the time. She said she can't get her mind off of the unhappy things at night, and can't go to sleep. Not to mention my daughter, her mother, who can be described as bi-polar and narcissistic. I am worried about some medical condition causing this sleep disorder, but more so about her mental stress over this asshole suddenly back in her life. They have been separated for 2 years. I will stop there, but there is much more. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
I think she is not able to sleep in night

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Health Care magic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description it is clear that she has ability to get sound and deep sleep which almost rules out major mental or physical condition. This is evident by the fact that child sleeps only for 5-6 hours which is completely normal (in fact less than required sleep) for a 10 year young kid.

Although I prefer to be non judgmental but from the available description I do not feel that children should be handed over to their biological parents when one is bipolar and other is busy with weeds. This becomes more important when both are taking irrational decision without taking care of interest of kids and others in family.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
