Question : For two weeks I have had a loss of appetite. Lost 8 lbs. Belching occurs when I drink water, or eat anything. Gas is frequent. Cramping and upset feeling occur when I eat, or don't eat. (No consistency) I went through two 5 pill prescriptions of Levoflokacin 500MG to no avail. Constipated for last five days-taking Milk of Magnesia. Gall Bladder removed and divertic operation 5 years old. Current diet consists of crackers, soup, jello, water. Over 70-. GP says get appointment for GI work-up. Still a few weeks off. No fever. What is it and what can I do? I forget to report a CT scan was done after 10 days and showed my stomach was clear!

Brief Answer: Your GP is right. Add some more investigations. Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query. Your GP is right in suggesting you an appointment for a GI work up which might include an endoscopic examination of both your upper and lower intestinal tract in light of the past history of diverticulitis/diverticulosis. However, I would like to add a few more tests like a complete blood count including ESR, blood sugar test (fasting and post prandial), a liver function test, a lipid profile test, kidney function test, a routine urine and stool test, and an ultrasound abdomen. By the time you could get an appointment with your gastro enterologist, the reports would be ready to be consulted with him. Till that, you could go for a proton pump inhibitor, an anti emetic, and a probiotic drug which might be helpful for the present. Avoid taking laxative drugs frequently if it could be managed with dietary regulations like a high roughage diet and enough liquids after your symptoms are relieved. You can continue with your daily activity and I would encourage some routine morning walk and some aerobic exercises within your medical limits to keep your self active. I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts. Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
