What Causes Loss Of Consciousness During A Cough Spasm?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Few minutes ago I passed out during cough spasm. I could not inhale and I lost consciousness, thanks god my roommate heard something was wrong and he waked me up. I was totally out , it took me a while until I knew what happened. I am 54 yo , I probably lost it first time in my life. I saw doctor today he gave me Guaifenesin with Codeine, and Amox-CLAV 875 MG antibiotic. I am coughing for last 2 night, very dry , zero mucus. slight fever 99.5, congested sinus but not running. Now I am freaking out because I am scarred to go sleep. Usually when I lay down the cough get more intense. I am sucking cough drops one after another. I did some reading about Whooping Cough , damn I hope that's not what I have.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be post nasal drip

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
The reason why you have a cough on lying down is because of a post nasal drip.
You could use a nasal decongestant spray .
Did you have a WBC count before taking Amoxiclav? There are certain viral infections which may worsen with Amoxicillin.
Don't worry you are unlikely to have whooping cough from your description.

Thanks for yoor answer, I am using nasal decongestant. I can breath OK, what worries me that the cough will not let me inhale causing suffocation. This happened few times today and yesterday but today was the first time that I actually passed out.
My question is what happens if nobody is around? Will I come back by my self?
I read that Whooping Cough may cause brain damage, probably because of cutting the oxygen from getting to your brain.
No I did not have WBC (whatever that means)Doc noticed that I in the past I used that antibiotic.

Brief Answer:
Don't worry. You will come around

Detailed Answer:
Sorry, WBC is white blood count which is helpful in differentiating bacterial infection from viral infection.
Don't worry, your passing out is only due to a transient laryngospasm. Brain damage can be caused only from oxygen being cut off from longer duration.
Don't worry, you will come around even if nobody is present .
