Question: I have lost my sense of smell. sometimes I get headaches behind my eye. my nose runs clear liquid sometimes and I get a 'wierd feeling half way up my left nostril. those symptoms have been with me a year or so now. I have just checked my nostrils with my finger and the left one is much more open with like a hole. the right one has cartilage and is very different.

Brief Answer:
Consult ENT surgeon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for the query under Health care magic . I have understood your concern.
Smell helps us to enjoy different aromas & also protects us from from potential risk ( like leaking of gas ).. so it is important for us.
We can smell when small air particle enters our nose & stimulates nerve endings under inner skin of nose ( mucus membrane ) to take information directly to brain center for smell for analysis of information & get realization of particular smell.
So the causes of loosing smell (Anosmia) can range from -
- Affection/ inflammation or infection of nasal mucus membrane allergic/ bacterial or viral in form of common cold, sinus infection
-Obstruction of nasal passage causing poor air entry in nose & so less sense of smell- nasal polyp/ bone deformity/ deviated nasal septum/ infected hair follicle in nose /adhered crust formed from nasal secretions/tumor in nose
- Brain damage- can be due to aging/Brain trauma or surgery/ diabetic neuropathy/ under nutrition with deficiency of B12, folic acid or Zink.
* In your case it seems to be obstruction & narrowing of nasal passage...as your observation goes... may it is combined with allergic congestion of mucus membrane./ frontal sinus involvement (causing head ache / clear nasal discharge ).
* In this context you would need through examination of nasal passage along with needful investigations to pin point the cause followed by specific management. Please consult an ENT surgeon
Inhalation of vapor would help to ease such head ache
I hope that answers your query. Any follow up query is welcome
Thanks
