What Causes Loud High Frequency Sound Ringing Inside My Head?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: I'm a 47 yo white female with high pitched tone in left side of my head for over a year. I'd seen an ENT & had a normal audiogram. He offered me a choice of having an MRI, but said likely would be normal, so I declined. He said I'd have to learn to live with the noise. However, for the past month I've had a swooshing sound in the same side of my head, separate from the high pitched noise. It's in sync with my heartbeat, comes & goes, but worsens after exercise & leaning forward. Last week a dermatologist suggested that an annular rash on the left side of my face may be sarcoid or cutaneous lupus. It's practically gone after several days of applying steroid cream. My Family doctor is considering putting me on med for systolic hypertension that has come on over the past couple of years. I take Levothyroxine for Hashimoto's disease & my TSH is good. I had a parathyroid tumor removed a few years ago & my Calcium is fine. I'm otherwise healthy, besides being forty pounds over ideal weight. My question is: are the high pitched sound and the swooshing sound related somehow, even though they seem to be independent of one another.

Brief Answer:
The two could be related.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms. I am glad to note that ENT examination and audiometry were within normal limits, which rules out a problem with the ear.

There are some rare conditions such as glomus jugulare tumor or other vascular lesions, which need to be excluded. So, it would be better to get the MRI of brain done, even if the chances of finding any abnormality is low.

The two symptoms are most probably related.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
