Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: hello, I am 83, 5-6 165lbs. Had good hearing in rt. ear. bad in lt. ear . use hearing aids. After wax removal by metal syringe irrigation , have low hearing in both ears and hearing is muffled and shrill and difficult to understand. I play in drum and bugle corps for 40 years and haven't used ear protection. I should have since ears are fragile. Had brain scan and is clear. Dr. thought it might be acoustic neuroma. I should have had vacuum removal. Any suggestions would be appreciated. YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
No acoustic neuroma.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any giddiness or facial weakness ?

Kindly get back to me with the details.

As per your clinical details, it appears to be nerve deafness ( which is common in elderly, due to deterioration of nerve function, which is responsible for hearing).

If you are suspicious of acoustic neuroma, I suggest you to do MRI brain with BERA audiometry tests.

In the mean time continue using hearing aids.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions

Doctor,

I had MRI which found no problem
No giddiness or facial weakness
This happened when I had ear wax removal by irrigation by nurse
What can I try to improve the muffled, shrill, distorted sound I hear?

Brief Answer:
Tab. Folvite (folic acid)

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

It confirms nerve deafness ( MRI - negative for lesions and no other symptoms).

I suggest you to take nerve nutrient like folic acid ( vitamin) with the use of hearing aid to get back your precise hearing ( vitamins are nerve nutrients).

Kindly consult your treating doctor for strength, dosage and prescription for the same.

Take care.
