What Causes Low Heart Rate?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jul 2015
Question: Hi was at my cardiologist the other day and I told him my pulse rate is between 50 to 57 beats per minute when laying in bed and even when I go up and do a flight of stairs and he said that was nothing to worry about. I am 58 years of age but not an athlete does this sound ok to you. Are there people out there with different beats higher and lower that are still ok.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
i need report of your ECG

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX
I am Dr.Rajesh Teli MD
I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM.
Normal heart rate varies between 60 to 100 BPM.Rate between 50 to 60 is low I.e.bradycardia.I presume on your ECG it would be sinus bradycardia.
Such low rate in absence of any structural heart disease is not significant at all.you may not be athelete ,but if you have been regular walker and exercise daily ,it can be attributed to it.
I request you to check your thyroid function tests done .hypothyroidism can be cause of bradycardia.if you have symptoms like giddiness of fainting you may get holter monitoring for 24 hrs done which will give us complete analysis of your heart beat,
Waiting for your feed back

Brief Answer:
it confirms sinus bradycardia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,as per my presumption it is sinus bradycardia, additionally you have extrasystoles so I suggest you to get Echocardiography and stress test done prior to holter.
