What Causes Low Mood And Low Energy In Day To Day Routine?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: I've heard of this, but now I'm experiencing it. I cry at the slightest hint of something sad, whether a movie on TV or conversation with someone or even just hearing a song or music that brings about feelings of emotion. I can't even talk sometimes about something sad without my voice shutting down and crying beginning. What in the world is going on? I've only begun noticing this within the past year or so. I'm a 69 year old male. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Such symptoms could be occurring due to normal change in mood with ageing

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You are a 69 years old male and have complaints of crying on slightest emotional conversation or even on watching some emotional scene on TV. To some extent such symptoms can be considered as normal considering your age, but such frequent crying is not commonly seen even with age related emotional changes. A lot of individuals develop emotional changes with age, they start feeling sad, develop feelings of emptiness, some times even detachment. A lot of individuals start feeling that life is finite and has end in unconscious mind and this results in emotional changes. Such symptoms occur to some extent in most of individuals after 60-65 years of age. But these are psychological theories and have not definite basis.

Try to appreciate what you have achieved in your life and continue to spend more and more time in teaching your life experiences to younger generation. Spend some time in exercise also. Read good books and you will feel better.

As your symptoms are resulting in impairment such symptoms can be presenting feature of mild to moderate depression. I would like to know if you have other symptoms of depression like persistent low mood, lack of energy, lack of interest in day to day routine, poor social interaction, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, helplessness etc.

Mild depression can be treated with short duration treatment by antidepressants like Sertraline. The drug will reduce the crying spells and would result in better mood. Visit a psychiatrist for evaluation and if needed start taking medicines.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.
