What Causes Low Testosterone Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Nov 2015
Question: I'm a 26 year old male, and my doctor informed me that my testosterone levels are at 143-- which was quite low. My doc is contemplating differing treatments, why in the world would my test be so low and how come I was not feeling the symptoms? I work out 4 times a week and take GNC supplements daily. Any info is appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Testosterone

Detailed Answer:
Your doctor has correctly planned to repeat the testosterone levels.

I agree they are low and merit a thorough evaluation. It is best to check testosterone levels in the morning.

When I see someone like you in my practice I order the following tests in addition to a comprehensive physical examination:
CBC
CMP
TSH
Free T4
Total Testosterone
Free Testosterone (by Equilibrium Dialysis method)
SHBG
FSH
LH
Prolactin
Ferritin

And based upon findings on physical examination, a Karyotype is also considered.
Ideally many if these tests are ordered in a step wise manner.

There are dozens of causes of low testosterone, such as genetic reasons, trauma to testicles, mumps affecting testicles (to name a few)

Thank you. Should I be doing anything in the meantime? Should I stop working out and taking supplements? Also, I typically, I know this is bizarre, put carmex (the lip balm) on my testicles every morning to prevent dryness and itching throughout the day-- would this cause anything? Should I stop doing that? Any info is helpful, thanks!

Detailed Answer:
It is ok to work out but see your endocrinologist soon to make sure there is no major pituitary problem.
Show your supplements to your doctor.
There is no known effect of carmex on testosterone.
