What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain And Back Pain With Bloody Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: I have been having severe lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, and bloody diarrhea for a week now and low grade fever. The pain is unbearable. I went to the er and they did a catscan and it was normal. Urine normal. Bloodwork was normal too except white count was high but they contributed that to steroids I am on because I have central nervous system sarcoidosis. The just sent me home with pain meds. The pain is bad even with pain meds and I wake up screaming in pain when the meds wear off. I don't know what to do next.

Brief Answer: can be a bowel infection Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. Your symptoms are suggestive of a bowel infection, probably due to decreased immunity as a result of prolonged steroid intake. Mostly the large bowel is infected as you are also having bloody diarrhoea. And severe lower abdomen and back pain point to a possible diverticulitis. Bowel pathology are easily missed on a ct scan. I would suggest that you show to a gastro specialist and get a colonoscopy to help arrive at a diagnosis, asap. Also ask your treating doctor (the one treating sarcoidosis) if your steroids can be withheld for a few days till your infection gets under control. Hope i have helpful. Get well soon.
