What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain And Palpations?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: Lower abdominal pain (mild to moderate), slight tenderness with palpation. It comes and goes. It does not seem to be related to eating anything particular. My routine colonoscopy 4 years ago at age 50 was fine, no polyps, no diverticulosis. Gallbladder ultrasound last spring (for nausea that came and went over a 1-2 month period) was also fine. I also had a pelvic ultrasound which showed a few small fibroids (2-3 cm) which both my family physician and my OB/GYN said should not be causing me any problems. (The nausea left on its own at the end of the 2 month period without medical intervention and was thought to be a virus.) I have been diagnosed with IBS. Could my symptoms just be and exacerbation of the IBS? Would a special diet relieve the symptoms? I have checked out the symptoms for celiac disease, and I don't seem to follow that symptomology.

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

YES it is most likely IBS. In IBS the pain need not be related to eating anything particular.

Colonoscopy and gallbladder USG is normal in it.

Your fibroids have nothing to do with this pain ( unless you are getting it only during menses)

You can have fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are nutritious and help prevent constipation .

However, if you experience bloating from increased fiber intake, try focusing solely on soluble fiber found in fruits and vegetables instead of grains.

A gluten-free diet may reduce symptoms.Eliminate barley, rye, and wheat from your diet to see if gastrointestinal problems improve.

Instead of eating fried foods and animal fats, focus on lean meats, fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat dairy products.
