What Causes Lower Left Back Pain, Dizziness And Black Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jan 2017
Question: Last night I felt a pain in the lower left side of my back and this morning I woke up feeling dizzy. I went to the restroom and noticed my stool was black. After laying back in bed for another couple hours I had the urge to go back to the restroom and again my stool is black. Although I am still dizzy a little, there is no pain. What do you think might be going on. O' by the way, I just finished taking antibiotics for a UTI last Thursday.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I pased carefully through your concern and would like to explain that yuor current symptomatology seems likely to be due to gastrointestinal bleeding (most probable from the upper gastrointestinal tract).

Whether it may be caused by an adverse effect of your recent antibiotics treatment or a differecnt bleeding source it remains to be determined by the underlying medical tests.

Diverticulitis may also be a source of digestive bleeding.

A fibrogastroscopy and if necessary colonoscopy needs to be performed.

Also, a complete blood count to check for possible anemia, liver and renal function tests are recommended as well.

I recommend to ask immediately medical assistance to the nearest ER service at your living area as an active bleeding is considered an emergence situation.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
