What Causes Lump On My Temple, Minor Headaches And A Feeling Of Numbness?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Apr 2014
Question: Hi I've got a lump on my right temple. I have minor headaches and a feeling of numbness when tired in the same area. I've had a blood test which showed normal live function, and no excess protein. My Dr felt this information rule out giant cell arteritis. The lump has been there for about 4 months, I'm 28, and athletic, I'm going to have an ultrasound in a few days. I also have a visual disturbance similar to a visual migraine, that does not go away and am concerned that the two may be linked. Can you please let me know what other conditions could lead to these symptoms.

Brief Answer: This could be a soft tissue swelling. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for posting your query. I have noted your details and investigation findings. First of all, giant cell arteritis or temporal arteritis occurs in people aged 50 or more; so, I would have been surprised to see positive results for this condition in you. In any case, the most specific blood test for giant cell arteritis is ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), which is elevated, and the diagnosis can be confirmed by doing a temporal artery biopsy (you do not require that biopsy!). In your case, the most likely cause of the lump in right temple region could be a soft tissue swelling arising from either the muscle or fatty tissues. Ultrasound scan would be helpful in making the correct diagnosis. Also, the lump and visual migraine are independent and do not seem to be linked. I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.
