Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: My son is 32months old last evening I realised that he has developed a lump below his ear on the right side of his throat. He has also been with fever. The doctor has prescribed moxclav bd 5ml twice a day. And said that he has mumps. My son has already been vaccinated with MMR. Evrywherr I read it says, mumps is a virus and that no antibiotics can help with it... So why has the doctor prescribed an antibiotic?

Brief Answer:
here are the details

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for query.
Mumps may occur even after vaccination, as no vaccine gives 100 percent protection against any disease.
Antibiotics are generally prescribed to prevent secondary bacterial infection.
If your doctor thinks that there can be chances of secondary bacterial infection, he can prescribe it.
Hope I helped you.

regular diet

You need not to give or avoid any special food.
Try giving him lot of fluids like ORS, soups, etc.
Cold sponging if fever is high.
Rest will fasten the recovery, avoid school.
Continue fepanil syrup.
Hope i helped you.

I have been giving him fepanil 250, 5ml every four hours as his fever is back very 3 hours. Also my 32month old boy is very cranky and refuses to eat absolutely anything. He is very uncomfortable in his sleep too and keeps waking up and crying. Is it normal for the fever to be constantly there??

Brief Answer:
give ibugesic plus

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
I think he is cranky due to pain and swelling below ear. I would use ibugesic plus syrup instead of fepanil. Ibugesic plus contains both brufen and paracetamol, thus giving better pain relief and longer duration of fever free period. You can ask your treating doctor about the dose.

Give lot of liquids as I already explained.
Fever will be there for atleast 3 to 5 days.
After giving medicine like paracetamol or brufen there will be afebrile period of 4 to 6 hours after that fever can again rise. So continue the treatment.

Hope I helped you.
