What Causes Lumps In Cheeks And Pain In Liver Area?

Posted on Thu, 8 Jan 2015
Question: Hello, I have had bilateral pea sized lumps in my cheeks for about two years. These have been tender at times but recently have been consistently tender. I feel they hurt more after consuming alcohol. I also get pain under my right ribs in the liver area. I was diagnosed with lupus in my twenties but have had no organ involvement.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history , I read it carefully.

Bilateral pea sized lumps in the cheeks- 2 years- now consistently tender and - hurt more after alcohol. This indicates that they are of inflammatory in origin.

With the age of 49, I would advise you to get an excision biopsy done for two reasons:
1 ) You get the disease out of the body and more importantly
2 ) you get a histo-pathology diagnosis.
The oral lesions can be due to lupus so important to get a proper diagnosis...
This helps to clear many doubts that always linger in mind.

The cause of the pain under the right ribs in liver area can be :
Diseases of the liver, gall bladder, and can be easily diagnosed by a physical examination and ultrasonography to start with. If there is a pain on local pressure on the lower rib area, this can be costo-chondritis. Please get checked for this too.

Do you think the nodes and liver could be connected? I do have night sweats but have always thought that they are connected to my age. The sweats have been around for about as long as the cheek nodes.

I have had costocondritis before and the sensation is completely different.

Obviously my concern is Lymphoma or possibly cirrhosis. I don't think I drink enough alcohol to be cirrhosis but who knows.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Probably not lymphoma or cirrhosis. Please get Ultrasonography done

Detailed Answer:
Understood your concerns and history you have given

I do not think that the nodes and the liver are connected.
As suggested a simple test of ultrasonography will be sufficient to rule out the cirrhosis and other diseases in the area of pain.

Night sweats can be due to age related as you are suspecting.
Incidentally both the thing might have started together. There are no known cheek nodes with hormonal influence.

Lymphoma in cheek is again very very rare and should not be considered as a probable diagnosis.

Thank you very much for your prompt responses. I of course knew the answer was to go to the MD but like most people I think the worst and use the Internet and try to self diagnosis. I will go to the doctor and stop obsessing.

Thanks

Thanks for appreciation...

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your appreciation.

Obsessing is too a part of the age process and this is natural and nothing wrong and to be worried about it. Internet has really made the things to be looked into different perspectives and gosh it really frightens many, many a times. But yes also seen many patients who do tally the advise and do come back to say thanks if they find they were rightly advised.
I think this is a better use of Internet.

So requesting you to stop the search... get an ultrasonography and check-up- FNAC or biopsy done and relax, I hope everything is going to be OK.

You may please keep me posted if you like...
Have a great day ahead.
