What Causes Metallic Taste In The Mouth While On Meloxicam And Hydrocodone?

Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: I had a total knee replacement 13 days ago and was given hydrocodone for pain. Since my pain was minimal I only took it 7 1/2 days. I now take Tylenol. I am on other medications for HTN ( amilodipine besylate, losartan and diltiazem), OA (meloxicam) diabetes, (metformin and glimiperide) and hypercholesteremia. Since Saturday I have had a strong metallic taste in the mouth and nausea which my home care PT attributed to the pain med although it should be gone by now. Should I be looking at other sources for this problem?

Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Meloxicam and Tylenol should result in resolution of the pain. The meloxicam can be replaced by an alternative NSAID such as diclofenac or naproxen along with a muscle relaxant to see for improvement in the symptoms.

Hydrocodone can be replaced by tramadol for this breakthrough pain episode for the time being. PPIs like lanoprazole should be advised along with the NSAIDs to avoid NSAID induced GI ulceration.

My issue is not pain. I am concerned about the development of a strong metallic taste in my mouth along with nausea. I would like to know if one of my medications could be causing this symptom. Originally it was thought that the metallic taste was from hydrocodone but I have not taken it in 4 days.

Hello again.

The metallic taste cant be attributed specifically to these drugs.

Oral cavity, Ear, upper respiratory tract infection and sinusitis can lead to such a metallic taste in the mouth. These causes should be looked for by examining the respective areas.
