Question: I started having a bit of tingling on right side of right hand and right side of lower right leg couple of weeks ago. Now it is occasionally achy. Having occasional twitching in various parts of body. Freaking out, ALS? Biggest fear. I'm on protonix. Any correlation?

Brief Answer:
Protonix should not cause these symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.

If you would have presented to me as an outpatient,I would have told you that mild tingling in one side upper limb and lower limb is not even a far off logic to fear of ALS. Though, twitching is a symptom of ALS but more commonly prevalent condition associated with twitching in various parts of the body is 'benign fasciculations'.Even anxiety can be a common cause for the same.

ALS has to have some cardinal features like-
1)Thinning of limbs
2)Weakness in limbs
3)Fasciculations

Though you have twitching, which can be fasciculations, but in absence of first two symptoms mentioned above,ALS is less probable.

Tingling may be due to -
1)anxiety
2)radiculopathy due to spinal degenerative changes
3)neuropathy
Please start doing mental relaxation exercises/meditation/yoga and see if it improves. If this tingling persists or worsens, then it will probably need an evaluation for the above mentioned causes.

Protonix is a commonly used proton pump inhibitor,an antacid drug and it is not known to cause such symptoms in clinics.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some follow up questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.
