What Causes Mild Vaginal Spotting During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Oct 2015
Question: I am six weeks pregnant and just recently went to the dr about menstrual like cramping. I was told that mild cramping such as this is normal. I was given an ultrasound both outside and inside of me and both came back with nothing alarming other than they saw a thickened endometrium lining but no sign of sac yet. Since last week, I will sometimes see just a few red/brown particles at the bottom of the toilet after I urinate. They look almost like small rocks almost and will only come in threes or fours. Last night I noticed a little more in addiction to a red mucusy string. There is no discharge or discoloration on toilet paper or pants. I'm not sure if this is light spotting or something else and very concerned waiting for my appointment at the end of this week.

Yes this is my first pregnancy. I am 21 y/o. My periods have been irregular since I can remember always about a few days to no more than two weeks off than the last. I do not have access to my ultrasound to upload, and my last period was about middle of August I don't have the correct date but I would assume anywhere around August 10-17.

Brief Answer:
With irregular cycles , that can happen .RElax.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the update.
With irregular periods, it is possible that while you assume that you are around 6 weeks pregnant, you are actually less pregnant than that.
When was your pregnancy test positive ?
And how have you calculated 6 weeks - based on your LMP ?
With irregular cycles, it may take a while for the gestational sac to show up since ovulation ( conception ) might have been later than what you have assumed.
Please have a repeat transvaginal scan ( no point doing an external abdominal scan for early pregnancy ) after a week, and insist on having the report.
Please upload it.
You have mild brownish bits of discharge.
I would recommend you to start taking progesterone supplements in addition to folic acid tablets, since you are having cramping too.
It will minimize your risk of having a miscarriage.
Do not be anxious, with irregular periods, you would have a sac showing up later than a woman with regular periods would.

I took my pregnancy test two weeks ago after i hadnt had my period for a month. The doctors calcukated how far along i am based on my last menstrual period. Is 1600 folic acud too much? The prenatals i am taking now already contain 800 folic acid

Brief Answer:
Please do not go by LMP, as you have irregular cycles.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, so please do not go by the LMP ( last menstrual period ).
IN your case, periods were irregular so the baby will show up in a few more days.
If you are already taking prenatals, no need to take extra folic acid.
Discuss progesterone with your doctor.
Take care.
