Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: I have two issues. first , I have mucus build up in my head and stays mostly by my right ear. this leads to not being able to hear. I have been to the Doctor 3 times and they have not solved this problem yet. I am tired of not being to hear. Second, I have severe lower back pain. It is so bad that I can not walk, cook, do dishes, vacuum or anything without hurting so bad I could cry. I have had xrays and a catscan which only show arthritis. Don't know what to do

Brief Answer:
audiometry & MRI SPINE.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having hearing loss with back pain.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be aged onset deafness or Eustachian tube dysfunction (mucus build up in nose) with osteoarthritis of spine.

I suggest the following measures to overcome your hearing loss.

1. evaluate with ent surgeon, otoscopy (status of ear drum), audiometry (to know the type and degree of deafness, to know the patency of Eustachian tube).

2. Osteoarthritis with other abnormalities causing difficulty in day to day activities (ligament injury, nerve entrapments) can be better evaluated with MRI. Kindly go ahead.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:
upload the reports.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Audiometry is the choice of investigation to differentiate senosrineural or conductive deafness. It also gives information of mucus or fluid build up behind the intact ear drum and Eustachian tube status.

Mucus or fluid build up can be managed with medically (oral/nasal decongestants, steroids), surgically (myringotomy with grommet).

If you have already done (audiometry), kindly upload the reports. So that, I can be able to comment on your present status.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.

I have tried all meds for mucus so I guess I will see if my insurance will pay for an ear specialist. As far as my back is concerned I have had all test and seen a bone specialist. He said I had artheritis and the only thing he could suggest was to have the nerve clipped. I did not want to do that because if I broke something I would not feel it.

Resistent or recurrent mucus or fluid accumulation behind the intact ear drum can be managed with surgery.

Related to your back pain, It is inevitable ( osteoarthritis) with the age. Go according to your treating Ortho surgeon.
