Question : 2 moths ago, I was put on Belvique and Bystolic, I seemed to do well the first month then began having severe muscle spasms in my lower legs and feet to the point that I passed out and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. It was felt that the Belvique was he cause and it was discontinued but I am still having the spasms just not as severe. My electrolytes have all been normal so there doesn't seem to be an imbalance causing the problem. The Bystolic doesn't list this as a side effect but I'm concerned that it may be. BTW, I am allergic to all statins and had the same type of reactions with them.

Brief Answer:
Bystolic in higher doses can cause muscle cramps

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Your emergency team at the hospital the first time certainly were right by saying that belvique was the main cause for your muscular spasms, but they failed to mention that bystolic (with the active ingredient nebivolol) can also cause muscle spasms and cramps.

Although, muscle cramps and spasms are more commonly seen when nebivolol is taken at a slightly higher dose than is recommended. So please discuss your dosage with your doctor, and make sure you are not taking a higher dose than recommended. I would although recommend discontinuing bystolic permanently and find a suitable substitute ma'am.

So in my opinion, bystolic could very well be the cause for your current presentation. I hope this information helps you ma'am. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.
