What Causes Muscle Twitches In Body?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: I have been evaluated by a neurologist for bodywiide muscle twitching and had a clean emg of my arms and legs, and then another clean repeat emg of my legs (because I was so anxious). I recently (after looking online) looked at my tongue in the mirror with a flashlight and I see it jumping and quivering. I do not feel these fascinations but I can see them. I am swallowing fine and not slurring my words at all. my tongue doesn't show atrophy. I am terrified this is early bulbar onset. I am a 47 yo female in otherwise good health.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

If you had two normal emg's this is as good as it gets. everyone has tongue twitching. the tongue fasciculations I motor neuron disease are slow writhing movements.

If you're really concerned have the neurologist do an emg of your tongue but this is excessive and I doubt that this would calm you. you just have to come to terms with the fact that there are limits to what medicine can diagnose and treat and muscle cramping happens to be one of those disorders.

If there were muscle twitches and the emg was normal it's not motor neuron disease. fasciculations if that is indeed what you are seeing are only a sign of a peripheral nerve disorder, they do not signify a
certain disease and are not the hallmark of early motor neuron disease.

It is much more likely you have a peripheral nerve disorder such as a pinched nerve or a neuropathy which are common than motor neuron disease .

If you still struggle with this look up benign fasciculations syndrome and see what you think.

Hope this helps
