What Causes Nasal Bleeding?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: My very young son has severe bloody noses almost daily and they include large (LONGER THEN HIS INDEX FINGERS) clots and often run over 30 mins+. the blood literally pours out his nose and even his mouth at times as he also spits out large clots. It is becoming to the point he is becoming very dizzy and has double vision at times. Any ideas? His medicines are not stopping them in any way. He is on no blood thinners or aspirins and dose not bruise easily. When it occurs it is a horrendous amount of blood as he is only 61 lbs.

Brief Answer:
He may need nasal pack.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for what your son is suffering.

Nasal bleeding could be due to injury nose, deviated nasal septum, blood disorders, irritation of nose or sinus problem. The possibilities can be narrowed down through physical examination, blood tests, nasal endoscopy and CT scan. I am not sure if these tests are already done. If not, I will recommend those.

Since he is bleeding in large amounts with clots and also has dizziness and double vision I would recommend you take him to ER or an urgent care clinic where you may find ENT surgeons. A doctor should apply nasal pack to stop bleeding. The aforementioned tests can then be performed to evaluate the cause and treat it accordingly. I don't feel ice pack will work in such cases.

You have said he spits large clots. He most likely is swallowing blood through the posterior nares when he tilts his head back. Encourage him to spit it out then swallow.

In the interim I would suggest he sits upright. Pinch his nostrils with thumb and index finger fro 10 minutes when he gets episode.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any queries I will be happy to help you.

Thank you
