Question: My husband had shoulder surgery yesterday. We are unable to get his doctor to call us back. My husband is very nauseous. He has been taking the Hydrocodone for pain. He has no appetite. He took the Promethazine 25 mg. for nausea, but it is not helping. He is due to take the pain medication, but can't due to his nausea. What would you recommend?

Brief Answer:
You can try Ondansetron for nausea.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs XXXXXXX,

Thank you for posting your query here.

I would strongly recommend you to call the hospital ER where your husband got operated and try and get in touch with the doctor who operated. It is unwise to suggest treatment without being able to clinically assess the patient condition.

I am indeed surprised to know that your husband has been sent home a day after the shoulder surgery, in my humble opinion, it is not the best of the practices as complications such as the one you are currently facing can crop up in the post operative period and they better be managed in a hospital setting.

That said, the immediate plan of action should be, give your husband a stronger anti-emetic (anti nausea/vomiting) medicine such as Ondansetron (4mg orally, thrice a day).

This medication may not be available as OTC in your locality, you will need to check with the pharmacist and also please try and get in touch with his treating doctor, an if you can not, I would suggest you to call the hospital and talk to one of the doctors in the hospital.

I sincerely hope to have addressed your concern and impressed upon you the need for a proper clinical examination before instituting any remedy, particularly because it is considered as immediate post operative period which requires close monitoring, and it is impossible to ascertain the exact reason for the nausea remotely.

Wishing your husband a safe and speedy recovery.

Best regards
