What Causes Nausea And Dizzness Along With Palpitations?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Dec 2014
Question: I have been sick for some time (13 years), mainly lightheadedness and dizziness with some naseau. I get these episodes that last a month or two and then I am good for months. Have had multiple tests done and nothing seems to be wrong. I do have anxiety and know that is part of the problem, problem is that the anxiety stems for the symptoms I am getting. I am not anxious until I have symptoms. This morning I woke up out of the blue with vertigo, then very rapid heart beat, extreme ligtheadedness, then naseau. That was 2 hours ago, I am still very naseaus and dizzy. I am really sick of feeling this way. I think maybe I had too much sugar yesterday that did it?

Practice relaxation exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

I would like to know whether you have had some chronic stress or frequent short-lived stressors in your life? Because this may be the most probable reason for your problem if multiple tests are normal.

You have symptoms like lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea and rapid heart beat today. I would like to tell you that these symptoms are usually a part of anxiety disorder and result from some psychological stressors (if there are no medical illnesses).

Drugs like escitalopram or sertraline can be considered in such cases as these reduce anxiety.

Also, relaxation exercises like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, biofeedback work wonderfully well in such cases.

You can visit a psychiatrist for detailed evaluation of your symptoms. Please note that above mentioned drugs are only to be taken under your doctor's supervision.

I dont think having too much sugar could have done this.

Hope this helps you.
Any further queries are welcome.

Thanks.

I am currently seeing a therapist for my anxiety and have seen one int he past. She says I have PTSD from my childhood and early adulthood. But I do fine and these issues are sporadic. I get these "zaps" of lightheadedness that last 30 secs or so and they scare me, that causes the anxiety.

Brief Answer:
Medicines are required.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting a follow-up query.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) consists of group of symptoms like hyperarousals, emotional numbing, avoidance and flashbacks.

Your symptoms of lightheadedness, dizziness and rapid heart beats could be a part of hyperarousal due to PTSD.

The drugs useful are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) like escitalopram or sertraline will take care of your symptoms.

Also, medicines like propranolol are useful in reducing hyperarousals and nightmares.

Psychological therapies like cognitive behavior therapy are very useful in such cases.

Please visit a psychiatrist to discuss about these treatment modalities. I suggest you to take any of the above mentioned medications only under your doctor's supervision.

Wishing you good health.
Thanks.

I dont like that it always gets classified under "anxiety". SOmething is causing the symptoms, which in turn cause the anxiety...

Brief Answer:
please enlist what tests have you undergone.

Detailed Answer:
I understand that you are in a difficult situation.

I request you too please enlist what investigations/tests you have undergone. This might help me in giving you apt suggestions so as to what would be the more specific tests which you require to rule out the possibility of any medical illness.

Also, in my opinion there would not be any harm in giving SSRI drugs a trial under you doctor. These will definitely help you.

Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

can you explain how vertigo relates to anxiety. I understand lightheadedness from hyperventilating but not vertigo

Answered by Dr. Shubham Mehta (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
anxiety worsens vertigo.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow-up query.

Anxiety can worsen vertigo but cannot itself cause vertigo.

However there are many cases which are usually labelled as 'recurrent undiagnosed vertigo' for which cause cannot be determined.

ENT specialists can be of help if they can work on vestibular rehabilitation with you.

Antivertigo medications are to be taken along with.

Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Symptomatic treatment is the best option.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow-up query.

Eustachian tube dysfunction usually does not cause vertigo. Inner ear pathology can cause vertigo.

I would advise you to not worry for the diagnosis and stick to the symptomatic treatment. That would be better for you. I say so because, your investigations are normal (as you mentioned in your earlier query) and this indicates that there is no gross medical pathology.

For your fatigue, you can take multivitamin supplements. Also take balanced and regular diet. This will help you in treating dizziness also.

For sore throat and tender gland, you can take a course of antibiotics. You can do hot water gargles regularly.

For anxiety, drugs like escitalopram or xanax would be useful.

For nausea, tablet Ondansetron can be used.

You can consult your physician for the doses as most of these drugs are prescription drugs.

Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
visit your doctor now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
I understand that your problem is really distressing.

I would advice you to request your physician to start with anti-vertigo drugs like cinnarizine or betahistine.

Go for a MRI brain, if not already done.

Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

Why should I have another Mri? if the symptoms have been the same for 8 years??
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shubham Mehta (5 hours later)
Brief Answer:
This may be an indication of MRI.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for query.

In my opinion, Persisting symptoms of same intensity and not responding to any treatment is an indication for MRI BRAIN (preferably contrast-enhanced) even if you have had it earlier.
This might detect a previously unnoticed pathology.

Thanks.
