What Causes Nausea And Vomiting?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Jul 2016
Question: I returned from a month in West XXXXXXX on Friday. For the past week (starting on Monday prior to leaving fo home) I have been nauseated. I don't empty my stomach, but I am queasy all the time and throw up a couple times each day. I went to a walk in clinic yesterday, and they told me it was probably the result of different foods, change in climate, and malaria medicine. They gave me a prescription for anti-nausea medicine. I took 2 doses. It helps immediately, but the effect doesn't last long, and it makes me terribly sleepy. It seems that I should be better than this by now. I have stopped taking the malaria medicine, so I don't think that is causing it. They didn't do a blood test. My temperature is normal and I don't have diarrhea.

Brief Answer:
diet modification/switch medication OR Further evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hi miss XXXX,

you highlighted your present symptom and history of present symptom but i need to know more information :
are you overweight/obese?
have you ever been diagnosed with GastroEsophageal Reflux disease?
do you feel heartburn when nauseated?
do you feel pain in epigastric region(above umbilicus)?

if answers to two or more of the aforementioned questions is a "yes", then you might need to visit a gastroenterologist at the earliest and undergo endoscopic examination to rule out "stomach and/or esophagus" pathology.

if the answer to most of above listed questions is "NO", then advice is:
- take OTC pantoprazole and metoclopramide for one to two weeks before breakfast after discussing with your treating physician
- diet modification ( less fat in diet, NO junk food, less spicy food, no beverages; no alcohol)
- Avoid alcohol
- put two pillows under head whilst sleeping
- take small meals and sit upstraight for atleast 30 to 45 minutes

wish you good health and hopefully your would fully recover within a week.
