Question: I performed oral-anal sex on someone last week and had nausea, fever and diarrhea all weekend. The fever only lasted a day and no vomiting. Don't know if the sex part is the cause. But I do want to know what might be the cause

Brief Answer:
It can be related to sexual intercourse !!!

Detailed Answer:
Warm Welcome. I appreciate your trust in HCM and assure you are on best portal on the globe for expert online medical services.

I have thoroughly reviewed health query you raised, and well realize all of those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

I feel sorry for the symptoms you had after that sexual intercourse. It may be due to sexually transmitted diseases too. If this happens due to HIV we use a term Acute retroviral syndrome for it. You had the symptoms of viral infection after sexual intercourse that can also be due to HIV infection if that was unprotected sex and the status of partner is not 100% clear to you.

We usually suggest early testing for HIV infections. Detectable viral load comes in blood in 10-15 days (we can do viral load PCR test) and 15-20days after exposure (we can go for ELISA) is best time to test for HIV. This is called window period in which results are not promising so we have to wait for that time.

Other sexually transmissible disorders may be Gonorrhea, Herpes, Hepatitis B,C, Syphilis , if suspicious clinically, your Physician may test you for them too.

In Gastroenteritis (also sometimes a viral disease) there may also be same symptoms. Your Physician will help you clear the doubts and will rule that out too for you.

I preferably suggest you to go for a thorough evaluation by an Infectious Diseases Specialist. He will go for a physical exam and will run a battery of tests on you to find out if you got some infection from sexual partner or not. Management of the case goes according to testing.

Hope I addressed all the concerns you have. Let me know if you have further questions. I will be more than happy to clear any doubts. For any disease you have, a timely follow-up is necessary regarding the treatment efficacy and to see if there is a need to change treatment options. So keep a follow up to see how you doing (Always write down my name in start of your questions at this forum & I will be with you in no time).

Thank you. There was no penetration. No exchange of semen. Just rimming. What is the likelyhood I could contract HIV orally? And the symptoms showed 2 days later.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms show up after a time lapse and this is natural course of disease!!

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back with a follow up. I am glad to assist you with the doubts.

Yes rimming can also transmit the diseases that can transmit through sexual contact. Oral secretions also contain disease causing pathogens in active disease state. Oral contact is also a source of transfer of disease.

Symptoms may get delayed and never appear the same time when sexual contact happened.
