What Causes Nausea Relieved By Eating?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Aug 2014
Question: Hi! My dad is 79 and has been having consistent mild nausea for a few months which is generally relieved by eating. Appetite is okay, and this is his only symptom. Blood counts are all normal, and he is keeping up his normal routines. He is in good health otherwise. He has been referred to a gastroenterologist. Dr. doesn't think this is a gall bladder issue, since the nausea appears to be relieved by eating. Do you have any ideas? Does this sound ominous, even with the nausea being his only symptom? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Could be an ulcer

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Nausea relieved by eating suggests the possibility of an ulcer or gastritis (inflammation in the stomach). The referral to the gastroenterologist is appropriate. Your father needs an upper endoscopy to look at the inside of his stomach. Ulcers, gastritis, and other conditions can be identified by this procedure. The fact that his blood counts are normal and that he is otherwise in good health and doing normal routines is reassuring that it is not ominous. He would probably be much sicker or losing weight if it were stomach cancer. In any case, the endoscopy will be able to identify that if present. Nausea is a very nonspecific symptom and could be due to a huge variety of conditions. The gastroenterologist will obtain a thorough history to see if other conditions might be causing it, and will ensure that more ominous conditions such as cancer are ruled out quickly. Hope this answers your query. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them.
