What Causes Nausea, Vertigo And Headache?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 Sep 2016
Question: I am 69, borderline type 2, overweight and not on any diabetes medication. I just try to follow a good diet and my A1C has dropped from 6.8 to 6.4. However, Tuesday night, having eaten very little that day, I awoke late at night with a serious sugar craving. Sleepily, I decided to indulge myself with a couple of apricot preserve laden PBJ's. Big mistake, I think, for within an hour or two of ingestion I awoke with terrible abdominal pain and bloating. Also, extreme nausea and vertigo upon sitting or standing up. Another symptom was that my swollen abdomen, although swollen almost rock hard, was painfule to touch, especially on the lower left side. I have remained in bed now for three days, sipping only water, continually. I have gotten up only to urinate, and have somehow had no vomiting. Semi-acidic belching, much abdominal gurgling, and considerable flatulence until yesterday afternoon when I finally had a very hard constipated bowel movement, followed within an hour or two by mild diarrhea. So, last night I had a piece of toast with a little unsweetened apple juice. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I have been experiencing a few intermittent "headaches" which Tylenol seemed to alleviate. Today, I still have a slightly swollen and still sorta hard abdomen, but with very little abdominal pain or point tenderness. Had a "normal," albeit modest, bowel movement around midday. But just got a little headache awhile ago. Took Tylenol and it's gone. Still have some nausea and dizziness when I stand up. Geez, am I out of the woods yet with this diabetic HHS thing or do I need IV fluids? If so, I go to a very good nearby hospital, although I'd rather not.

Brief Answer:
There are some reasons why you should see a doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thank you for asking.

I read carefully your description and feel sorry to learn about your bothersome symptoms.

There seem to be some different health problems that need to be evaluated:

1- The nausea, vertigo and headache are probably due to a Menier syndrome, it needs a detailed clinical evaluation and treatment. At least you can check the blood pressure at home to rule out a hypertension.

2- The abdominal pain and constipation at your age needs also to be evaluated.

3- During these days the blood sugar may be altered and needs to be re-checked.

So you have many reasons to see a doctor for a clinical examination and probably some examinations.

Hope I was helpful. Please feel free to ask if your having any further queries.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
