What Causes Nausea When Recovering From Kidney Infection?

default
Posted on Sat, 27 Jun 2015
Question: I had a uti/early kidney infection, took macrobid, was still in pain and not feeling well, had CT scan that came back normal and was put on Cipro. The flank pain went away but I still feel nauseous, sick and unwell. How long does it last?

Brief Answer:
CBC and ESR to look for evidence of infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Nausea and sense of being unwell is not a reassuring sign with regards to recovery from an infection. UTI should be treated empirically but culture sensitivity testing should be done to target the specific bacteria responsible for the infection. Both macrobid and cipro can cause nausea. After being put on antibiotics it takes around 48 to 72 hours for symptom resolution. However the important point right now is to look for evidence of recurrence or any overt infective process. A complete blood count along with ESR or CRP and Urine R/E plus Culture sensitivity testing can be advised to look for these possibilities. In the meanwhile domeperidone or metoclopramide can be given for the nausea and the fever should be checked. If present fever should be lowered by cold sponging and acetaminophen.

Wishing you best of health
