Question: I am scared, confused, and do not know what to do. I had a complex ventral hernia repair on 5-19-14. I spent 10 days in the hospital. I ending up developing double pneumonia after surgery. I have lupus and a history of blood clots, peptic ulcers, gallbladder removal, kidney stones, and little other things. Since the surgery I have been nauseous and vomit at least 1-3 times per day. I have been taking Zofran but ran out yesterday. Today I have had 2 fifteen minute episodes of vomiting. I am having pain around my upper ribs under my breasts. I feel week and do not know what to do. My general surgeon got me an appt with a GI MD on the 29th....still 27 days away. I cannot keep food down hardly with the Zofran and without it I cannot keep anything down. My primary md has not called back. The surgeon has not called back. I am at a lost of what to do now. Please help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

If during this surgery abdomen has been opened, bowels obstruction due to adhesions or stitching intestine to the abdominal wall can be the reason. With this issue you should have some bloating, cramps, occasional gas obstruction.
If the upper middle pain appears after a meal, peptic ulcer (stress ulcer) can be the reason as well.
If your pain radiates to the back and is similar to the gallstones pain, stones in bile ducts can give such symptoms.

As most of mentioned issues can not wait for so long, I suggest you to consult your doctor as soon as possible. If obstruction sounds possible, feel free to go to ER.
If peptic ulcer seems possible, gastroscopy needs to be done. In a meanwhile you may start Omeprasole 40 mgs once a day.
Gallstones should be diagnosed with ultrasound.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
