Question: I have been having flu like symptoms now for 2 weeks. Initially it was nausea vomiting and diarrhea which sent me to the ER last Monday. They took bloodwork and said things looked ok and thought it was a bug. After 3 days of XXXXXXX change I went to see my primary Dr. They re-did bloodwork and said everything looked good except when I looked at results the monocytes were flagged as high. Monocytes were flagged at 13% (normal range 1-10) and Monocytes absolute were .80%(normal .20-.60). Is that normal? I feel fatigue every day headache nausea but vomiting and diarrhea have subsided. Submitting stool specimen tomorrow. I take Nexium and now have been told to take 2 times a day but barely can eat anything. In will though and then feel nausea and fatigue. Is there something they are missing? I was out of work all last week and I don't want to keep doing that. Feel something is more than flu

Brief Answer:
Wait for stool report, rule out inflammtory bowel

Detailed Answer:
Hi Ms. XXXXXXX

Thanks for choosing health care magic.

I have gone through your query and based on the details you have mentioned in your query, you seem to be suffering from infective gastroenteritis which typically presents as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Monocytosis or increased monocyte count indicates infection or inflammation which could be caused due to any bacterial or viral infection.

High monocyte count is also commonly seen in inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, which can be ruled out by your treating doctor by further testing.

I suggest you get your stool specimen examined and rule out intestinal infection.

If no significant pathogen is isolated, inflammatory bowel disease can be suspected.

Nexium can be continued as prescribed.

I hope I have helped you with this answer.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks.
