What Causes Neck Pain And Soreness In The Right Side Of Head?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: In late May I had sharp pains in my neck and I had a soreness in the right side of my head. I was treated for sinuses and drainage. The soreness was still there so I took flonase. That didn't work. Family doctor did a test to show my reflexes and was good. I was nervous so he ordered a ct scan
It came back negative and said
my looked good. After that my pains went away for about ten days. Came back it was more right sidehead sharp pains maybe once or twice burning sensation.i was also fullness in my ears an the base of my skull was getting pressure. Went back to the doc and he gave me norteiptyline. I started on 10 mg then went up to 20 mg and then was on 30mg. He also gave me shot in the head by my right ear in the muscle. Felt good that night. I have very high anxiety. I cry a lot. The pain is just annoying my like 3, 4 , or 5. Before I couldn't lie on my right side of my head down to sleep. Went to the neurologist a week and half ago and told me it was something to do with my occipital muscle on right side of head. He didn't call it occipital neuralgia. Gave cyclobenzaprine and ordered physical therapy and sent me to pain doctor. Pain doctor looked at my ct scan and neck xrays and said they were unremarkable and thought something myofascial. She thinks I'm depressed due to the pain and put me on cymbalta for pain and sepression? Do you have an idea of what this? I have been told this is nothing serious? I'm a teacher and started back to school last week. I cry a lot and can't focus. I noticed since I bent my head over a lot that my neck hurt later in the evening. Are these doctors right? Do I need to go somewhere else? Am I dying?

Brief Answer:
It could be Hypothyroidism or Temporal arteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
You are not dying.
Please get that out of your mind.
All the Doctors cant be wrong. Please have some faith in them.
What you can do is try to be positive and know that there is nothing seriously wrong with you. I do suggest you to undergo a blood test for your Thyroid functions(Free T3, T4 and TSH levels) as well as ESR and CRP and let me know. This pain and depression could be due to Hypothyroidism. It could also be Temporal arteritis though it is more common in women around the age of 50years or so.
I suggest you see a Rheumatologist who might have some answers for you.
But for the time being get these tests done and let me know the results so that I can help you.
For the pain, I usually advice Cap Tramadol twice a day which is usually effective in most of my patients.
Take care and you should be well soon.
Do let me know if there are anymore queries that I can help you with.

I forgot to tell you that u did have my blood checked. It was the standard test. Everything came out fine. It has just been too long and too many medications. I'm usually very healthy. I just don't understand why they can't find it? Is my anxiety making this worse? I haven't had my.menstrual cycle this month? Could anxiety and medication could stop it or delay it? I'm just very worried twacher/mother who wants her life back.

Brief Answer:
That is very good news.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam,
If all the reports are normal why do you feel that there is something wrong? Minor aches and pains will always be there in life.
Why do you think your life is not with you? Why do you want it back?
Why are you in mortal fear? All your reports show that there is nothing wrong with you. I think you should accept that you are alright and nothing is wrong with you.
Menstrual cycle can change due to anxiety as well as medications and definitely with the added effect.
If you are feeling so insecure, then there has to be more than the symptoms you are telling us. I suggest you consult a Psychotherapist who can listen to all your concerns and advice accordingly or you could tell us as there is nothing pathologically wrong and there is no organic illness that we can attribute it to.
I can only advice you to look at the brighter side of life and that you are so much better than most of the world. You come to a hospital and see the disability, sickness and how difficult life is for serious patients. You are so much better. Life is precious please don't undermine it with mundane problems. Every life has to have its share of problems but yours are far lesser than what is spread around the world. Please see the silver lining and look at life with the positive angle. There is so much beauty and love in store. Cherish all that.
Take care and Im always here to answer any of your queries,
Dr Rishi, XXXXXXX
