My son who is 23 years old now is on olimelt(1.25 ) and sulfitac(150 ) for the last 5 years .. Things going on well..passed graduation well and now in job.. However of late goes into negative too often and cant take small setbacks positively.. Takes lot of time for us to bring him back..What should be done..With the above mentioned dosage he sleeps quite a lot..
Another question is regarding his gaining weight .Any suggestion or recommended diet
slight changes in medication is required
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.
First of all I like to congratulate you for supporting your son and making an excellent outcome despite all odds.
Regarding inability to take setbacks there is need to evaluate for depression as there is ample possibility of developing one. If these episodes are of short duration only, a slight increase in dose of amisulpiride may suffice.
Regarding weight gain and sedation talk to your doctor to decrease the dose of olanzapine as it is one of the important reason for both the side effects.
In addition there is also need of regular physical exercise so problem of weight gain can be avoided.
I hope this helps you.
If you have further questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.

These episodes are of short duration and generally in the weekend..when he has full two days at this disposal without office.
During this event , he also gets angry , but within control.
Further as we are giving only 1.25 of Olimelt, should we reduce further (of course with our doctor's confirmation) and to what extent. How much increase in Slfitac should be there. Does Sulfitac cause sedation and weight gain..
Yes sulfitac may cause but chance is very low
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.
With available information it is clear that there is need to support him in different manner like development of hobbies and personal interests. These things likely to engage him during free time and will give him boost in self confidence.
Regarding olanzapine it can be reduced to quarter of 2.5 mg initially (.625mg) and than can be stopped altogether (one week interval). I feel that current dose of olanzapine is just sedative and there is little contribution in management of his behavior control. So there is possibility that reduction of olanzapine unlikely to bring new problems and he will maintain his symptom control without olanzapine.
Regarding sulpitac although it is not completely free of side effects but the chance of sedation and weight gain is much lower in compare to Olanzapine.
Further negative symptom control dose of Amisulpiride is 50 to 200 mg and can be increased upto 300 mg.
I hope this helps you.
