Question : I am 73 years old and I have been experiencing night sweats and hot flashes for 3 months. Each month they became more severe than the last month. At this time I am suffering severe hot flashes and night sweats 24 hours a day. I have had many blood tests by 3 family doctors and a ob-gyn for a ct scan.
all were normal. I am tired of going from dr .to dr. I hope that you can help me.

Hello

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXXXXX

Good day.

noted your history.

Very rarely, there can be post menoopausal hot flushes at this age. Usually they settle down by 2-3 years after menopause.

Apart from that, i would like to rule out a thyroid disorder and few rare hormonal conditions. Does she have any flushing ?

Carcinoid syndrome is rare, but can present with these symptoms at this age. It may be worthwhile doing a blood chromogranin -A level and a urine 5-HIAA test and a thyroid function test. Please discuss with your GP. They may not agree to do it ( due to non familiarity with carcinoid synrome) unless you persist.

If the above come back as negative, we may consider adding Pregabalin ( Lyrica) to control hot flushes. She may also benefit with soya bean, YAm and other phytoestrogens. Evening Primrose oil and omega 3 capsules also may help

Binu
