Question : Took an aid for insomnia containing valerian root and passion flower had my first nose bleed in 40 years. Any connection?
Brief Answer:
Valerian root can have such effects.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
I understand your query and concern.
Valerian root is known to have effect on vasculature,so do not worry it will resolve by itself.
Considering your age I advise you the following,
1.Get your blood pressure checked and controlled.(Since elevated blood pressure is known to produce nose bleeds in elderly)
2.ENT Consultation if recurrence of nasal bleed.
3.Cardiology consultation if elevated blood pressure.
Post your further queries if any,
Thank you.

Thanks for the info. I will discontinue use of valerian root. I am concerned about causing bleeding in my brain. Are there any other possible methods of solving my age related insomnia? Would any of the anti anxiety drugs, xanax or lorazapam for instance be of help.. My blood pressure has been typically 125/115 so any further bleeding will require most likely a visit to an ENT. I have also tried melatonin.
Brief Answer:
Clonazepam can be used for insomnia.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
Welcome again,
I advise you to take Tab.clonazepam 0.25 mg under expert guidance.
You can take Melatonin with clonazepam for good results.
Avoid Lorazepam as it has longer duration of action, thereby more sedation.
Yes visit your ENT surgeon if there is recurrence of bleed.
Monitor blood pressure regularly as elevated blood pressure will result in intracranial bleeding.
