What Causes Numbness And Pain In Finger After Having Injection?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: I had an injection at the base of my middle finger in Palm to numb it for partial removal of my finger nail that had splintered wood under it. The injection was extremely painful at the time. I had this done Friday noon, and now Sunday early morning still have a lot of pain at injection set and up into finger areas, and it seems more from the injection than right at tip of finger where about 1/3 of the width of nail was removed. It is still bandaged up. Is this pain normal from an injection like that. Taking pain killers but it seems like it should be easing up at this point. It's a deep burning pain.
It does still hurt at end of finger where nail we removed also but seems to radiate down finger too. Is it normal to still gave pain 2 days later. I do gave follow up with dr in 10 days

Brief Answer:
Might have to be re assessed by your surgeon in case of no relief.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef, a general surgeon answering your query.

Digital block of the finger at its base is a good local anaesthetic procedure for minor OPD procedures like the one performed in your case. However, I do not consider it to be so much painful as described by you either at the time of injecting or after such a gap of 48 hrs. I would advise you to check if your bandage was not too tight or if you had kept your operated hand hanging down, both of which could cause you much inflammation and pain. I would advise you to elevate the operated hand with the help of a splint or by your own self. You could keep it resting on a pillow while on the bed. In addition, I would also get a routine blood sugar done for you if not already done pre operatively.

In case the pain did not give up even after these maneuvers and anti inflammatory agents, I would advise you to get it assessed soon by the operating surgeon to rule out any tightness of the bandage, or any features of an infection setting in.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
