What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation In The Fingers?

Posted on Mon, 12 Jun 2017
Question: My husband is 65 years old. About three months ago his thumb and index finger became numb and tingly. Now both hands feel swollen and all fingers are numb and tingly. He also has pain in back of his neck and at times it goes down his back. When this happens he has trouble walking and he walks like someone who has had a stroke. He has had a cat scan, blood work, stress test and also seen a neurologist and a doctor for arthritis and also a heart doctor. The only thing he has been diagnosed with is carpal tunnel syndrome and a slight pinched nerve in neck. We are at our wits end trying to get a diagnoses and treatment. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Thanks for your question on HCM

I do understand your concern

“As” per your clinical history is concerned it is due to pinched nerve in neck so you can first try with conservative and physiotherapy like Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids. Such as prednisone, might help ease pain. If your pain is severe, your doctor might suggest steroid injections.
Muscle relaxants. Certain drugs, such as cyclobenzaprine and methocarbamol, can help relieve muscle spasms in the neck. Anti-seizure medications. Some types of epilepsy medications, such as gabapentin and pregabalin, can dull the pain of damaged nerves. Your doctor might prescribe oxycodone for severe pain. You can discuss with your doctor about it.

A physiotherapist can teach you exercises to avail stretch and strengthen the muscles in your neck and shoulders. Some people with cervical pain benefit from the utilization of traction, which can avail provide more space within the spine if nerve roots are being pinched.

If above two methods fails then surgical treatment will be the last option to engender more space for pinch nerve.

Hope that helps
