Question : Hi, I recently developed numbness and tingling all along the inside of my upper and lower legs. No back pain, no bowel or bladder problems. My primary care doctor thinks I may have injured my saphenous nerves, and he said if I still have symptoms in several weeks he will refer me to a neurologist. What will they do? How long do you think I will have these symptoms? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Nerve conduction studies may be done.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, it seems to be involvement of the sensory nerves (nerves located in the skin, responsible for providing sensations) of the thigh and leg areas. In some cases, it is self-limiting (resolves on own in a few days to weeks), especially if it is caused by minor trauma or a viral infection.

In some cases, it may progress or persist for longer, especially if it is caused due to antibody-induced damage such as in auto-immune conditions.

Nerve conduction studies would help to confirm the diagnosis and assess its severity.

Medicines such as pregabalin or gabapentin would help reduce the symptoms such as tingling.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
