Question : I am a 66 year old female. relative good health 5 cigarette daily (maybe).cholesterol a little high-take statins 20 mg daily. The last few months I feel a mumbness on my two outer left hand fingers. How can I find what the problem is? Please help Thank you

Brief Answer: It may be due to vitamin B12 deficiency. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX Thanks for writing to HCM Numbness on your fingers may be due to many reasons. You need proper clinical examination and investigations. It is important to know about the history of neckache.Disc prolapse in cervical spine may cause numbness over the fingers. Other causes may be certain vitamin deficiency like B12,Local nerve entrapment,Neuropathy due to diseases like Diabetes mellitus,Atherosclerosis,Vasculitis etc. You need investigations like routine hemogram,Random blood sugar,Lipid profile,Vitamin B12 estimation,Serum calcium & Vitamin D level.Further investigations can be done if needed. At present you can take vitamin B complex once daily for three months.You should also take calcium supplementation. You should continue taking statins. You should try to quit smoking.
