Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: Female 43, blood tests done at my primary care physician 2 months ago and all came back normail except AST 31 and ALT 47. Dr didnt seem concerned. Should i be

I was drinking 2-3 glasses of wine a night sometimes more on the weekend. Went to a neroulogust for numbness in hand after sleeping or being cell phone too long. She asked if my dr talked to me about my blood results and asked me about drinking habits. When i told her she said she thought the numbess was due to excessive drinking and could br Alcohol neuropathy and that i should quit drinking and follow up in 6 weeks. First time ive ever been to this dr and only spent about 15 mins there. Feel like i should get a second opinion because the numbness only happens when my arms are elevated for an extended period if time or when ive slept on them wrong.

Brief Answer:
Better to avoid alcohol; follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
First of all, your AST and ALT values are more or less within the normal limits only so you should not be worried about that.
Next, drinking alcohol regularly is not good for health and should better be avoided. The numbness might not be associated with drinking and can be just because of maintaining same posture for a long time or nerve compression due to sleeping in awkward posture, but there are chances of association too. Alcohol and smoking are the two most common causes of peripheral neuropathy. You have told that you have done all blood tests so perhaps you did blood sugar testing too. If you haven't, get it done because diabetes is also an important cause of peripheral neuropathy.
So reduce intake of alcohol and if possible, avoid it. Get the other things done too as advised.

Hope i have answered your question.
If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.
Regards
