What Causes Numbness On Bottom Of The Feet?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Jul 2014
Question: Several months ago the bottom of my feet felt numb as if they were asleep. That eventually went away but now when I go for extended walks 1/4 mile or more my legs become tingly and feel like they are vibrating for some time after i end the walk. When I sit the sensation is greater than when I stand.

Brief Answer:
Neurological evaluation is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms.

You need a detailed neurological examination to exclude peripheral neuropathy and lumbar canal stenosis.

In peripheral neuropathy, the nerves in the skin over feet/legs get affected leading to numbness or tingling. Vitamin B 12 deficiency and diabetes need to be ruled out as underlying causes.

In lumbar canal stenosis, there is pinching of nerves in the lower back, usually due to slipped discs. An MRI of lumbo-sacral spine may be needed, if clinically indicated.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
