What Causes Occasional Bleeding From The Lower Lips?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: Yes, I had a a purple like blood vessel very visible on my lower lip for a few years now, had it looked at by a dermatologist because it would bleed once in awhile. Was told it was nothing to worry about and hasn't been a big deal. This summer, and I'm not sure what caused it but basically the skin came off the area. I have been putting all kinds of chap stick, Vaseline, Orajel etc. And it will not heal. The skin will not grow over. Why?

Brief Answer:
Simple measures needed to handle problem

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam.

Welcome to this website!
I am Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX addressing your query. I am a Sr Consultant Dermatologist.

Your details have been noted and to me it appears that you had prominent vein which was superficial or also close to the surface that it got ruptured to bleed once in a while. This might have been triggered by minor trauma as is the norm while chewing food.

The recent episode probably happened as the oozed fluid got dried up to form a crust which got peeled off due to mechanical forces operative in the area while speaking or chewing.

I agree with your dermatologist that you need not get unduly worried but at the same time, here we have a problem that is bothersome and certain measures need to be taken which I explain as follows:

1 The first thing that is needed is to ensure that none of your teeth are touching the area and causing an injury to that part. Sometimes it is a broken tooth or malformation of tooth which results in repeated friction.

2 It is better to rely on inert lubricating substances for dryness. Few such options could be olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, or plain milk cream. I would prefer you not to use compounds rich in chemical substances

3 Have plenty of water to hydrate your lips.

4 If the bleeding from the area is recurrent and affects your routine, then you might like to consider a small procedure called cauterization. It is a short procedure that can be done in Doctor's office using an electrically operated machine after numbing the area. There is no down time and practically no after effect. Most often the skin would not grow due to repeated injury or excessive exudation.

I hope you are helped by the information and get well soon!

Our best wishes, always!

Thank you, I will try the coconut oil. I will add, that it is not bleeding at all any more. It is just an open sore that won't heal. I did have oral surgery a couple months ago and was concerned that while I was under anesthesia WHATEVER contraption they used to keep my mouth open may have caused some of the skin to come off.? Was wondering if drooling at night would keep it from healing? Again, thanks.

Brief Answer:
A little more action will set you towards recovery

Detailed Answer:
My Dear

Welcome back!

I will explain you the reason for your concerns.

1 As it is an open sore, you need to give rest to the area for healing to take place. If you can talk to your dentist, it is all the more better. Otherwise, keep the affected part well protected with antibiotic preparation, have vitamins, and use serratio-peptidase, a product for oral consumption that will help reach the affected area by antibiotics taken orally. I think your dentist might like to prescribe one for you.

2 Drooling at night usually affects the angles of mouth. If the sore happens to be in that part, then interference in healing by drooling might be a hindrance.

In the meantime, please abstain from using food items that are over spicy, have extreme temperatures and develop a routine for frequent mouth washes especially after consumption of food.

Best wishes, always!
