Question : 12 year girl having her first period at the same time develops a swelling throat on one side, has a little trouble swallowing. we take her to the pediatrician, he exams and has us do blood work to check tythroid gland. results come back normal. want's us to get a ultrasound. that was friday, yesterday i gave her motrin and now the swelling has come down and she feels much better. my question is should we be concerned and have an ultrasound? P.S. for the last several days there's been a window fan blowing on her during her sleep, which the temperature has dropped 20-30 degrees at night. Your thoughts on this!

Brief Answer:
Not related to periods.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The swelling of the throat seems to be a coincidence with her first periods. The swelling is not related to the periods. It is more likely to be due to a local throat infection- can be bacterial or viral. Since the pain killers have reduced the inflammation the swelling has gone down. She can do warm saline gargles and in case there is difficulty in swallowing she will need oral antibiotics to treat the infection.
An ultrasound scan is not immediately needed. You can wait and get the scan done in case there is no relief with antibiotics and warm saline gargles.
