What Causes Orange Colored Urine And Stools With Elevated Urobilinogen Levels In An Elderly Patient?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Jun 2018
Question: hello Doctor,
I suddenly have dark orange color urine and stool too. Stool is soft but not watery, I go 3 times daily to toilet. Bloating to the extent I can't walk from being filled with fluid and gas. Liver blood works are all good within the range. The only one thing that is off the range is urobilinogen, said elevated which was never before. This is going on for over a month now. I am male shy of 80 yo. Diabetic for very long time but controlled with pills.
Thank you so much,
Samir.

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks so much for this query.

I have reviewed your information. Unfortunately, it is difficult to adequately weigh in without seeing how far off the urobilinogen values are. Also, do you have any other symptoms such as itches and yellowish skin/eyes?

Increased urobilinogen is caused by disease conditions that affect either the liver or passages that carry bile. It could also be related to over destruction of red blood cells. However, I will need to take a look at all the available results to determine what the more likely cause is and guide further exploration evaluation. At times, this might be a transient elevation that needs no specific medical intervention.

I hope to hear back from you and will provide more details and insights following this.
