Posted on Sat, 25 Oct 2014
Question: Hi I'm 32 years old with history of endometriosis and pcos. I had a hysterectomy' last November due to these issues and now I'm experiencing pain again! The dr left my ovaries and I now have cysts on each ovary and a definite 19mm one on my right. IS it normal to get cysts so soon after a hysterectomy?

Brief Answer:
Cyst can be a functional cyst after hysterectomy
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

Post hystrectomy, cysts occur in 50-60% people in 1-2 years. So dont worry.
This cyst can be :
1. A follicular cyst which is due to developing ovum.
2. It can a functional cyst.
3. It can be an endometriotic cyst which has recurred.

Since the size of the cyst is 19mm, it is more likely to be a follicular cyst or a functional cyst. Pain may be due to adhesions that occurred after surgery.

If you had been my patient, I would treat you with 3 cycles of Oral Contraceptive Pill's which causes the functional cyst to regress. If it is a endometriotic cyst, the size won't decrease but pain will get reduced with OCP's. We can repeat scan after 3 months and plan treatment subsequently based on what we find.

However if pain does not subside with OCP's and there is increasing size of cyst, surgical intervention including removal of cyst would be required.

I suggest you to discuss about my opinion / option of treatment with your local gynecologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Feel free to ask any doubts.. Good day..
