What Causes Pain And Burning Sensation In Penile Shaft While On Trichloroacetic Acid?

Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: My husband was seen at the Dr's last Monday on the 28th to have some skin tags removed and 3 moles. One mole was located on the underside of his ball sack and 2 at the shaft of the penis. These have been there for more than 4 yrs and have never changed color, growth, or anything. Never caused a problem he just wanted them removed. The PCP applied a medication called Trichloroacetic Acid to the areas. There was burning when applied but the problem is now it has been 5 days and the spots are hurting, the ones on the shaft of the penis has a Black almost bruised looking spot around it. it is weeping clear liquid and bleeding as it is open wound.(Not a lot just some) Also the skin is starting to peel around it. The one on the ball sack is just irritated and has what looks to be like a cracking in the skin that is red and very sore. What needs to be done for this? Is there anything that we can do at home? Does he need to be seen at the Urgent Care or PCP? The Dr office is closed until Monday and we didn't want him to go this long without being seen. Is there anyway to counter react the Acid they put on him? Please if there is any information you can give we would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Brief Answer:
Irritant contact dermatitis due to TCA

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HCM..

I read history and saw the photos you posted...

I can understand your concern for irritation, burning and pain. And your husband has bruise and erosion.

Actually TCA has done its work. It has done irritation..may be called irritant contact dermatitis. You do not worry at all. Have patience.

He has to protect the area from secondary infection. So, I would recommend oral antibiotic for one week like CEPHALAXIN 500 mg twice a day for 5 days , anti inflammatory drugs and topical antibiotic like sisomycine cream. Avoid soap bath. Cleanse the area with diluted Dettol liq. He should take rest for a week.

I hope this would help him. He will recover soon. If the moles are not removed completely, you consult the dermatologist again. He may go for other method to remove the moles..like electrocautery.

If you have query any more..you are welcome.

Thanks..
