Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and can understand your concern.

I need to ask you some questions in order to give you a better judgement of what might be the cause :
-This symptoms affect only one hand of both?
-The pain and numbness is in all hand or has a specific distribution for example affects more the pinkie and ring finger or in the index and middle finger?
-When did the symptoms start?

Waiting for your reply.

Thank you.

Hello again.

Thank you for the information provided.

Your wife needs a detailed examination of the hands.

It is possible that her symptoms of pain and numbness might be related to a nerve entrapment like Bilateral Carpal tunnel Syndrome.
Another possible cause might be arthritis that causes inflammation on the small articulations on hands.

I would suggest to consult a physician and get examined.
A detailed medical history and a detailed description of the symptoms is necessary. The doctor will examine the function of the nerves in hands and arms ,and the articulation of the hands for signs of inflammation.

The treatment will depend upon the right cause but meanwhile nonsteroidal anti-inflammation drugs like Ibuprofen ,Naproxen etc will help with the symptoms.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need further help.I will be happy to help.

Take care.

Hello again.

Yes, you are right that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome does not cause swelling ,although the patients may have the sensation that their hands are swollen ,there is no obvious swelling.

The cause might be arthritis .There is a strong correlation between arthritis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome ,most if the syndrome is bilateral.
The inflammation in the joints will cause swelling and this can compress the nerve causing symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Hypothyroidism is often correlated with hand swelling and carpal tunnel syndrome ,so her doctor may test her thyroid function.

I would suggest to consult a physician and get examined because it requires a complete evaluation to determine the cause.

Please let me know if you have any question or doubts to clarify.

Sorry to disagree doctor but you can actually see the swelling and her ring finger is proof of the swelling.

Hello.

I am sorry If I wasn't very clear in my answer and left space for misunderstandings . I was trying to say that since the hands of your wife are clearly swollen then the cause for her symptoms is not only Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

So since she has bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome ,and her hands are swelled ,then some possible cause should be taken in consideration.
Arthritis and Hypothyroidism are two conditions that are closely related to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and can cause hand swelling.
Hormone therapy like Estrogen and Progesteron can cause hands swelling so if the symptoms begin right after the shot ,it should be taken in consideration.

Because there are many possible cause ,she need evaluation to determine the cause.A detailed medical history ,physical examination and some tests like thyroid function tests ,indicators of inflammation like ESR,CRP or specific tests for arthritis are necessary.

Let me know if you need further clarifications.

Take care.
