What Causes Pain And Numbness In Leg After Injury?
Question: I suffered a heavy fall on my right hip about 6 weeks ago which caused a fracture of the pubis bone in my pelvis. Xrays showed no other fracture and the fracture seems to have healed. However there was extensive pain in the right leg with "shooting" pains and some numbness. With medication of Tylenol 3 and ibuprofen the pain was controlled and after several weeks is now minor. However, for the past 2 weeks there has been severe pain in the left leg emanating from the buttock area and running down the left leg. I am still taking the same medication which only takes the edge off the pain. Walking produces severe pain in the left leg. What treatment can be taken to address this problem? Thank you

This is bad.
While I cannot diagnose, prescribe, or treat without being there, there are certain patterns of pain that imply what is underlying the pain. The nerve that runs out from the back to the feet for sensation (the SCIATIC NERVE) runs in the direction you are describing. Problems with the nerve are felt all along the nerve's path OUT from where the problem begins.
Disk disease is quite common and hits a nerve in the back or in the neck that then gives pain in a line outward from the problem. An MRI of the back will show the nerve and any problems it may be having. It is hard to treat. Surgery does not geenrally help the pain much/at all.
And, it can also be just sitting on the nerve wrong for a bit irritated it temporarily.
