Brief Answer:
Can be postural stiffness.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The tight neck muscles in the morning can be due to a muscle spasm due to wrong posture during sleeping. There can be mild degenerative changes in the cervical spine also that can be diagnosed after an MRI scan. You can get a week's session of cervical traction at your physiotherpists office and avoid using a pillow at night. Isometric neck exercises also can help.
I hope this answers your query.

A flat pillow I will try. I don't expect anything from a pricey MRI...

A 3/4 head turn is manageable. MY isometric will be to paint the
outside of the house during the next month on a 15 foot ladder.
Started a week ago part time...

25+ years ago I had a concussion from a side impact car accident plus
'office-posture' is not good for the long term....

Did I tell you I lift 40# tile boxes with a small cart 1X week for about
20 minutes? Thanks for the diagnosis.
