What Causes Pain And Swelling Around Knees Post Physiotherapy For Tibia Fracture?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: Hi Doc, I had fracture lateral condyle of right tibia and I was under the treatment of an ortho since the last 5 weeks on knee brace. The knee braces are off and I am doing physio for the last 5 days like lifting the leg off the bed, heel sliding, etc. I am able to bend my knee to a right angle with tightness on the knee. But the muscles on the thigh and calf muscles are still loose and I wanted to tighten that up so that I can walk. Since I started the physio, I am having swelling on my knee and it is not going away. Having a sore sensation while putting slight pressure on the leg. Is it because of me starting the physio? Can I know if taking hifenac p will help?

Brief Answer:
Yes. It will subside gradually.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The swelling and pain is likely to be due to a mild inflammation and starting of the physiotherapy. You can keep your leg elevated on two pillows while resting.
Doing a hot fomentation and taking hifenac P will also help. Be careful to take it after the meals to avoid acidity.
The sore sensation while putting pressure on the leg is due to loose muscles. These muscles will tighten up as you will start active leg movements and more intense physiotherapy.
This will take another 4-6 weeks to subside and to gain full strength of the knee and the leg. Do not try to do too much too early. Do not try to do painful movements. The bending will gradually return to normal with hot fomentation and exercises.
I hope this answers your query.
